M-HAT Tournament

Mental Health Awareness

Black top hat

The m-hat tournament started in 2023 to highlight the urgent need to quell wrong public perceptions of Mental Health in our Communities. As a result of depression, we needed to voice the choices that are now possible, but, considered taboo in many generations.

Mental health in Australia is a significant public health concern, often clouded by stigma and conventional ideas about men’s masculinity. Pivot Point Psychology acknowledges the distinct difficulties men encounter, especially those living in rural and remote areas where support services are less accessible. Stigma is also a major obstacle for women’s mental health care, with communities painting women as motherly and ever strong—often causing their struggles to be overlooked or dismissed due to fear of being seen as weak. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, this stigma combined with a lack of culturally relevant services further widens mental health inequalities.

Key Statistics 2025

Prevalence of Mental Health Disorders:

  • Anxiety Disorders: About 17.2% of Australians aged 16–85 (around 3.4 million people) experienced an anxiety disorder in the past year.
  • Depression: Roughly 7.5% (approximately 1.5 million people) had affective disorders like depression.
  • Youth Impact: Among Australians aged 16–24, 38.8% reported having a mental health disorder—representing a 47% increase over the last 15 years.

By sharing these statistics, challenges, and available resources, we hope to motivate family, loved ones, as well as people in our communities, to value their mental health, and recognise the signs, and the need to seek assistance when needed.

If you know someone who could fall between the cracks, please call for advice.
